ADHD and Autism (Neuro-affirming) Therapy

in Mississauga & Online

Therapy that can be personalized to fit the way your mind works

Living with ADHD or autism, or wondering whether you might be neurodivergent, can mean spending years feeling misunderstood, overwhelmed, or like you’re working twice as hard to keep up.

At Sunflower Psychotherapy and Counselling, we don’t see you as a problem to be fixed. We see a person with real strengths, particular needs, and a story that deserves to be told on your own terms.

Who is Neuro-affirming Therapy for?

Our ADHD and autism therapy is for teens and adults who:

  • Have a diagnosis, or are exploring whether ADHD or autism might explain their experiences

  • Feel overwhelmed by emotions, sensory input, transitions, or daily demands

  • Struggle with focus, organization, time management, or follow-through

  • Have spent years masking, people-pleasing, or trying to appear “fine”

  • Experience burnout, anxiety, low mood, or shame tied to feeling different

  • Want support with relationships, communication, work, or school

  • Were diagnosed later in life and are making sense of what that means

You don’t need a formal diagnosis to seek support. Self-identified and questioning clients are welcome.

Types of Therapy We Use

Strengths-based

Neurodivergent folks are often told what’s “wrong” with them. Our approach starts somewhere else: with what you do well, what matters to you, and what has already helped you get through hard times. Then therapy builds on those strengths rather than trying to make you fit a mold. This also means your sessions can be shaped around you, your pace, your communication style, and your goals.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT offers practical, skills-based tools for the challenges many neurodivergent people face, including intense emotions, impulsivity, stress, and difficult relationships. We work together on skills such as:

  • Mindfulness and grounding

  • Emotion regulation

  • Distress tolerance for overwhelming moments

  • Interpersonal effectiveness, including setting boundaries and communicating your needs

These skills are adapted to how you learn best, with concrete examples, visuals, written summaries, or extra repetition if that helps.

Narrative Therapy

Many neurodivergent clients carry stories shaped by society and other people’s views: “lazy,” “too sensitive,” “difficult,” “not trying hard enough.”

Narrative Therapy helps clients separate who they are from the problems you’ve experienced, and rewrite your story in a way that reflects your values, your resilience, and your identity.

Narrative Therapy can tap into creative avenues by integrating art, music, pop culture, and more.

What to expect:

A comfortable, flexible environment: We’re glad to talk about sensory needs, communication preferences, and what makes sessions feel manageable for you.

No pressure to mask: Fidgeting, pausing, stimming, looking away, or needing a break are all welcome. (I often sit cross legged, you’re more than welcome to as well)

A collaborative process: We discuss goals together. We can adjust as we go.

Practical and meaningful: Our sessions blend everyday strategies with deeper reflection on identity, self-worth, and belonging.
