Rebuild connection, understand each other, and move forward together

Every relationship has its hard moments and its happy moments. Maybe you’re having the same fight on repeat, feeling more like roommates than partners, recovering from a breach of trust, or trying to make a relationship work in a way that doesn’t fit the standard script.

At Sunflower Psychotherapy and Counselling, we help partners understand what’s really happening beneath the surface and build the skills and closeness to move toward the relationship they want. We bring experience particularly supporting couples whose relationships bridge different faiths, cultures, backgrounds, and identities.

Who relationship therapy is for:

Our relationship therapy is for partners of all kinds, including married, dating, living together, long-distance, and non-monogamous relationships, who:

  • Are stuck in recurring conflict or cycles of criticism, defensiveness, or shutting down

  • Struggle to communicate, feel heard, or feel understood

  • Are recovering from infidelity or a rupture in trust

  • Are navigating ethical non-monogamy, polyamory, or opening (or closing) a relationship

  • Include one or both partners who are neurodivergent (ADHD, autism, or both)

  • Are in multi-faith, interracial, intercultural, or LGBTQ2S+ relationships

  • Feel distant, disconnected, or unsure about the future

  • Want to strengthen a good relationship before problems grow

  • Are working through big transitions such as parenthood, moves, career changes, or loss

You don’t need to be on the brink of separation to come. Many couples seek therapy to deepen what’s already working.

Types of Therapy We Use

Strengths-based

Every couple or relationship has something worth building on: shared history, care for each other, moments of repair, a reason you came in together. We start there. Strengths-based therapy highlights what’s working, rather than treating either partner as the problem.

The Gottman Method

This method is grounded in decades of research based on what makes relationships last. This approach helps you strengthen friendship and intimacy, manage conflict, and build shared meaning. We use practical skills to replace patterns that disrupt connect and create routines to build more moments of warmth and appreciation.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

When emotions run high, it’s hard to listen or think clearly. We teach skills for calming your own nervous system and helping each other settle, including mindfulness, distress tolerance, and ways to pause, repair, and reconnect during difficult conversations.

Attachment Informed

We look at how your earlier experiences of closeness shape the way you each give and receive love, especially under stress. Understanding your attachment patterns brings compassion and helps you respond to each other differently.

Emotion Focused Therapy

Beneath most conflicts are deeper emotions and unmet needs: to feel safe, valued, and close. EFT helps you step out of painful cycles and express vulnerable feelings in ways your partner can actually hear, so you can turn toward each other rather than away.

We take pride in supporting diverse couples and relationships

Your identities, beliefs, and backgrounds shape how you love, argue, and make decisions together. We have experience working with partners from many walks of life, and we make space for who you are rather than expecting you to fit a single model of what a relationship should look like.

  • Multi-faith couples: navigating different religious or spiritual beliefs, values, traditions, and practices, including holidays, rituals, family expectations, and how to approach faith in parenting, while honouring what each of you holds sacred

  • Interracial and intercultural couples: exploring differences in cultural values, communication styles, family dynamics, and experiences of race, and supporting you through the pressures that can come from families, communities, or the wider world

  • LGBTQ2S+ couples: offering an affirming space for partners of all sexual orientations and gender identities, including support with coming out, family acceptance, minority stress, and building a relationship on your own terms

  • Couples whose identities overlap: many relationships involve several of these at once, and we approach the whole picture rather than treating any one part in isolation

Common Areas of Focus:

  • Conflict and communication: breaking repetitive arguments, learning to listen and be heard, and repairing after things go wrong

  • Infidelity and trust: making sense of what happened, supporting both partners through the pain, and deciding together how to move forward, whether that means rebuilding or parting with care

  • Neurodiversity in relationships: understanding differences in communication, sensory needs, emotional processing, and executive function, and building a partnership that works with, rather than against, how each of you is wired

  • Ethical non-monogamy: open, polyamorous, and other consensual non-monogamous relationships. We offer an affirming space to work on communication, agreements, jealousy, time and attention, and navigating change. Your relationship structure is your own; we’re here to help it work well for everyone involved.

  • Closeness and intimacy: reconnecting emotionally and, where it’s relevant to you, physically

  • Parenting: getting on the same page about discipline, routines, values, and boundaries, supporting each other through the stress of raising children, and keeping your connection as partners alive alongside your role as parents

  • A fair and respectful space: We aren’t here to take sides or decide who’s right. Our role is to help both of you feel heard and move toward understanding.

  • A clear starting point. We usually begin with a conversation about your history, strengths, goals, and what brought you in. We then have individual sessions to get to know each of you.

  • Skills you can use at home. Sessions combine meaningful conversation with practical exercises to try between appointments.

  • Flexibility. We adapt to your communication styles, sensory needs, and pace. We support couples virtually or in-person for 50 minute or 80 minute sessions. Together we can come up with a plan that works for everyone.
